Animal Assisted Occupational Therapy

Meet Riley!

Hey there, I'm Riley, your pawsitively pawesome four-legged friend!

I'm head over paws in love with people, and I've made it my life's mission to give cuddles to everyone I meet. I'm here to offer my furry support and unconditional acceptance. When you meet me I’ll probably be chewing my ball because I love to hold things in my mouth - it’s a way I help my body cope with my excitement! I can’t wait to meet you!!!

Here is a little about me. I would love to meet you sometime!

About Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)

Intro to AAT

Animal Assisted Occupational Therapy (AAOT), is occupational therapy interventions supported by the use of a therapy animal for a specific goal. The therapist and animal are certified together from an accredited body. Please see the infographic to your right to understand the difference between Support Animals.

Evidence-Based Outcomes

Evidence has shown benefits of AAT helping to:

Improve confidence in social engagement (group therapy settings)

Improve emotional regulation skills

Improve attention and participation (due to mutual interest of the animal)

Reduce anxiety and feelings of depression

Improve motivation and performance in motor skills (fine & gross)

How do we use Animal Therapy in OT Sessions

Use of a therapy animal depends on each individual. Animal therapy is not appropriate for everyone. Animal therapy in OT can include working with the dog to:

  • learn emotional regulation strategies

  • bring a sense of calm while exploring our sensory preferences

  • a mutual interest/discussion point to bring peers together in social groups

  • ease anxiety when learning/improving on self-care or life skills

  • provide a non-judgemental space when playing and learning new skills

How to know if Animal Assisted OT is right for your child?

AAT has different benefits and may not suit everyone. If you or your child are interested in exploring OT AAT sessions, feel free to reach out and we can discuss if it is right fit for your goals.
